Put Your “Best Food Forward!”

Timmie Hilado, the entrepreneur who started the Bibingkahan food stalls (full disclosure: I like those petite rice cakes they bake) has a new project.  She’s gathering the food industry and the foodies for an all-out summer food fiesta with a cause!

The event is called “Best Food Forward,” to be held on April 2-3 from 10am to 9pm, at the NBC Tent in Global City, Taguig.  For a fee of Php50, you’ll meet established food names in the industry as well as give opportunity for new entrepreneurs to shine.

I’m thinking of going here also because of the event’s social dimension.    ”Best Food Forward” supports two food-related charities: Unang Hakbang and Bayan Anihan.

Unang Hakbang Foundation tutors public schoolchildren in poor urban communities so they won’t drop out and teach streetchildren who can then earn their elementary and highschool equivalency certificates from the Department of Education (DepEd).  They have monthly feeding programs for over 300 street children.

Bayan Anihan is a component of the popular Gawad Kalinga (GK) Foundation, which tackles the systemic problem of poverty at its core by building wholistic and sustainable communities for the poor and with the poor.  The program allows sponsors to buy farms that will help a GK community feed itself.

At the end of the day, it’s not just about income for the food makers and satisfying people’s love for food.  It’s about how these events and the whole system of entrepreneurship can do its share in helping others on their feet.  That’s a win-win situation for me.

H+E Tip: You can buy your entrance fee at half-price, Php25 via Groupon PH.  (Thanks Miguel, I cited you! :)

Help Me Support

From a writer’s point of view there is something very wrong about this widget.

That is, unless I really mean to ask all of you to think of hunger and poverty as the new good.  Which I don’t.

What I do want you to check out is the new support-your-charity widget at my homepage’s bottom-right corner.  ”Hunger and Poverty” is a conduit that lets you (with the help of sponsors) donate to organizations that either give clean water or food to those who most need them.

A major factor in my decision were what readers said on the Comments Section of  my recent posts.

I think it’s a clever way to help in one’s spare time.  Next to directly giving cash or volunteering oneself.

If you click on that widget, you will help organizations like:

The World Food Programme, an agency under the umbrella organization of the United Nations.  Given that only 1 out of 6 people in the world can eat regularly, the WFP’s main mission is to fight hunger, supply food during disasters and help build communities through the security that food can bring.  In the Philippines, WFP is most active in the conflict areas of the south.

Charity: Water is a non-profit organization that provides safe and clean drinking water to people in developing countries. Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all sickness and diseases worldwide.  Charity: Water digs deep wells in far-flung areas at $4K-$12K each.  Donations go 100% to project costs.

I do believe that happy eating means sharing happily, too.  So thank you. :)
